MacGruber pulls off the nearly impossible… make a good movie from a recurring Saturday Night Live sketch. Bombs such as Coneheads, It's Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, The Ladies Man were a complete waste of celluloid. Exactly 2 have been good… The Blues Brothers (masterpiece) and Wayne's World (nearly masterpiece). MacGruber is not a near masterpiece, but it is good. Very good.
If you've seen the SNL sketches you know there wasn't much there. MacGruber sits in a room…. says some dumb things… and then blow himself up. Any movie made from these sketches would have to develop the character far further than any other sketch. The movie handles MacGruber's background early on.
